I‘ve only been stretching my septum actively for about a year now. Which isn’t very much, considering I size up around every three months (or longer as I get bigger). But even so, I’ve learned so much and had some spectacular fails.

Lube and Re-lube

You are literally dragging a piece of metal through a tear in your skin in order to widen it, you’d be crazy not to lubricate it to help the process along!

Lube up and massage your septum, lube up the taper, lube up the prospective piercing jewellery, just do it. Else, you might rip your septum open!

Take Your Time!

If you stretch too fast you’ll do two things: you’ll tear your piercing or you won’t stretch it at all. Either way, it’ll be painful. Stretching a piercing takes time. You need to let the skin gently stretch. If you act too fast the skin may just bounce straight back to the previous size. I take at least an hour to stretch my septum incrementally. Most of the time I’m just watching a video while it sits in my nose.

Oh, and this goes for the period between sizing up as well! Your piercing needs to re-heal and you should treat it as though it’s a fresh piercing, particularly the bigger you go. So, it goes without saying, don’t skip sizes and wait a couple months for your septum to properly stretch to it’s next size!

Your Nose Will Drip!

When first getting your septum pierced or if you’re had any sinus testing before you’ll know that your nose is a testy area. Any messing around easily leads to a runny nose!

Techniques to Promote Stretching During Healing

Speaking of taking your time, there are some techniques that may help the process along during healing and while in the midst of using a taper.

Tug on your septum. Yes, I said tug on it. I picked this up from reading forums about stretching to larger sizes, but I feel it helps along smaller sizes too. For bigger sizes push it up into your cartilage in order to make a “grove” for the ring. I’ve read that stretching to a point where the ring is constantly rubbing against the cartilage can create a really sickening feeling – this is great way to avoid that!

For smaller sized people like myself, I like to use the same method in order to loosen up the piercing, so that the actual act of tapering is less abrasive.

The Jewellery

Choose Jewellery that’s easy to close. I swear I make this mistake again and again. The higher the gauge, the harder the ring will be to close. I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t quite so brave as to struggle with two pairs of pliers inside my nostrils, along with a fresh piercing.

And unless you’re using a taper that you can screw your jewellery into, opt against internal threading. Trust me, you do not want to be struggling to push the raw edges of a screw into a freshly stretched septum.

Remember that especially compared to ear stretching, there is less and less jewellery for bigger sizes. Unfortunately there isn’t much large ornate septum jewellery around – fourteen gauge is usually the cut-off and they really start to dwindle around twelve). But there are septum adapters that allow you to wear smaller sized jewellery without sacrificing your size.

Flare Your Nostrils

Sounds weird, right? But flaring your nostrils while you have a taper current sitting in your septum will do the same thing as the previously mentioned tugging. It’s super important that you get as much of a gentle stretch as you can. Else, you might struggle to fit the bigger size.

Are you a seasoned septum stretcher? I’ve love to know your tricks. I’m only at a ten gauge currently, but I can see myself going bigger in the future!

I sometimes think about going larger. I like the look of pincers… I'm at the minimum size to wear them. Can't wait to see what you wear in your goal size!

You can stretch any piercing. 🙂 Although most people don't stretch all the way up to the stretched ears kind of size.

I’m at 4 gauge right now in my septum. I used to be at a 2. I used tapers myself and lubed them up with Vaseline. There were a couple times I went to a piercer and had them stretch it for me. Once when I went from a 6 to a 4 and then when I went from a 4 to a 2.

Now I am back down to a 4.
