It’s been almost a month since my birthday and I’m only now getting around to writing this oddities haul! This birthday I wanted to focus on adding some unique items to my collection.
The best way I thought of getting back into collecting antiques is to hit up some of my favourite antique stores on the day itself. We went over the Blue Mountains in the rain and hit up a foggy huge antique store called Grampa’s Shed. We stumbled onto it years ago when exploring up that way, and I’ve been forgotten it! It’s the perfect place for finding something really unique.
What Curios Did I Get?
At Grampa’s Shed I picked up this amazing cow skull. I love cows, and I couldn’t get past how huge it is! This skull is missing the lower mandible but is still twice the size of my head!
On Etsy, I picked up some cabinet cards from Samantha’s Antiques and LoveBizarreOddities. I’ve become interested in collecting them lately, but I’m a little too picky. The middle one came with a lock of mourning hair from the pictured person themselves! How cool is that?
You can’t see it too well from the top image but at the very bottom is a mourning hat with pinned veil from the nineteen-twenties. It’s beautiful and actually fits me really well. Why can’t all hats look like this?
What do you think? I’m starting to realise that you either love or hate this kind of stuff. In my view, it’s all just beautiful reminders of the past. It doesn’t hurt anyone, these people are long past and, perhaps, might like be remembered in such a way. Besides, who wouldn’t want a beautiful Victorian woman framed on the wall?
What’s your view: would you collect this kind of stuff? If you do, let me know what’s on your wishlist for your own oddities haul!
