Plan 9 from Outer Space, formerly known as Grave Robbers from Outer Space, is a 1959 Sci-fi film considered the worst movie ever directed. It was directed by Ed Wood, a directed famous for his eagerness to direct, but failure to make anything seemingly proffessional, later immortalised by Tim Burton in the film Ed Wood.

Saying all that I loved this film. First I watched Plan 9 from Outer Space, then Ed Wood and then The Drunken Peasants reacting to Plan 9 from Outer Space, all in one sitting. I’m addicted, which is why I’m writing this spotlight! It was the perfect z-grade, classic horrible horror movie!

Goth Icons Vampira and Bela Lugosi

Vampira was the original Elvira, taking inspiration from Lilly Munster and Morticia Addams. But after she was accused on having a part in James Dean’s death, she lost her job and become just another reject that created the cast of the film.

Bela Lugosi was a close friend to Ed Wood, who found him during his drug addled old age, he starred in previous films he directed. Plan 9 from Outer Space is considered by some as Bela Lugosi’s last film ever made. While actually it only includes reoccuring stock footage and a scene shot before the idea for the film was even conscieved.

Both characters play characters that were killed in the first scene of the film, and are resurected by aliens trying to destroy earth as the undead. They resemble vampires more, purely because of the stock video used portrays Bela Lugosi in his vampire garb and I guess they just went with it?

If you watch this movie, it’s free on YouTube, you’ll find scenes that change rapidly from day to night, the ground in the cemetary scenes moving live blankets when characters walk, 100% realistic dialogue and even more treats.

Have you seen this movie? What are your thoughts on Ed Wood and Plan 9 from Outer Space? It’s awful, and I love it!
