This semester, as one of my last, I decided to finally take photography! It’s a class that I have been meaning to take forever. But I kept flaking out because it’s out of my field. It was well worth it though, I’m starting to get really inspired in my photography again! For example in my my recent class I spent four hours photographing my friend Caitie and hanging out. (You might remember her from my ghost hunting at the Helensburgh tunnels outfit of the day or from her own blog Quiet and Conscientious).I used a digital pinhole camera to take these shots. It was my first time using one, so be kind!

The Truth is Out There

These pictures were entirely spur of the moment – Caitie just so happened to be channeling an androgynous beatnik poet that day. (She actually graduated two years ago, so it was great having her crash my class!) I felt her look created a really awesome contrast between the cactuses and red earth at the botanical gardens nearby my university. Especially when it comes to her bright blue hair! I ended up channeling Fox Mulder and tried to take some alien-esque and 90s style photographs. Think “the truth is out there”, the X-Files, beatnik alien and Area 51.

My Experience with Pinhole Photography

I struggled a bit with the pinhole camera. You need lots of light (I’m used to shooting in shadows). It’s recommended to use a tripod (I prefer shooting with my hands). And you definitely need lots of patience! Basically, I enjoy none of those!

What do you think? Have you ever done pinhole photography before? Did I succeed with these photos? Let me know!

  1. I was literally thinking about pinhole cameras the other day, but the old type with photo paper. I was thinking I’d love to do a “Pinhole Perth” blog. Hahaha 🙂
