Dark Books for Dark People | YouTube Video

What’s darker than a good book? Ever since I was really young I was always the bookish type that lurked around the school library searching for Vampire young adult novels. One of my earliest memories is from before I started school. I wanted to be like my older brother who left me to go to school each day so I decided I would poke through encyclopedias and research Egypt and make my own reports about mummification at home. Don’t ask me if I could read or understand anything that was in those old encyclopedias, I can’t for the life of me remember, but I remember enjoying myself immensely.

Growing older, I studied English and creative writing at University and continued my love of young adult fiction. Spooky young adult stuff is my favourite genre to write! You know, the kind of stuff you read when you’re younger and it seems so fantastical, but when you go back you realise all of the gory themes that were hiding between the lines. Kind of like Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book, which I’ve included in the video above. It’s a book about a young boy who grows up in a cemetery, raised by a vampire and a family of ghosts. But the reason for his living in a cemetery in the first place is in order to escape a serial killer who murdered his entire family.
